Perhaps more exciting than Smokey’s appearance on the hit TV series, however, is the new album which the singer premiered on American Idol, recently performing the single “You’re the One for Me” with Joss Stone in late March. Time Flies When You’re Having Fun, tentatively scheduled for release in May of this year, remains true to Smokey’s collaborative style of performance and production, and includes appearances by India.Arie, Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, and many others as well.
Though whether or not the album will be up to par with the singer’s early Motown hits waits to be seen, Smokey’s eye for talent seems to be as clear as ever (his collaboration with Joss Stone dates back almost a decade ago when the singer was fifteen). No doubt one of the greatest R&B producers of our time, the collaborations which Smokey has in store for his new 2009 album promises to be quite impressive, regardless of how the music compares to “Second that Emotion” (a Miracles song with the singer recently performed with Joss Stone). Though I’m sure Time Flies When You’re Having Fun will be well received by Smokey and Motown’s loyal fan base, it will be interesting to see what kind of musicality the King of Motown has left to give.
